PE FILM

What is PE film?

Since the early 20th century, versatile polyethylene (PE) film—synthesized from ethylene monomers—has marked significant breakthroughs in materials science.

As a globally utilized plastic, PE film plays a vital role across various industries due to its lightweight nature, high durability, excellent transparency, and chemical resistance.

History of polyethylene development: The history of polyethylene (PE) development began in the early 20th century and can be divided into the following key stages:

  1. Discovery and early development (1933–1939): In 1933, Eric Fawcett and Reginald Gibson at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) accidentally discovered polyethylene. They synthesized a white, waxy substance—polyethylene—by polymerizing ethylene gas under high pressure. In 1939, ICI began commercial production of polyethylene.
  2. Applications during World War II (1939–1945): During World War II, polyethylene was used as an insulating material for radar cables. Thanks to its excellent electrical insulation and lightweight properties, polyethylene played a crucial role in Allied radar technology.
  3. Post-war commercialization and diversification (After 1945): Following the war, polyethylene began to be widely commercialized. Scientists developed polyethylene in various densities, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
  4. In the 1950s, additional types of polyethylene, such as linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), were produced using various manufacturing processes and catalysts.
  5. Technological innovation and new applications (Late 20th century to the 21st century): By the late 20th century, technological innovations had further expanded the application areas for polyethylene. The development of new materials, such as Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), has expanded the use of polyethylene into more advanced fields, such as medical devices and ballistic protection equipment.

Entering the 21st century, environmental protection and sustainability have become key priorities in the development of polyethylene. Polyethylene recycling and the development of eco-friendly products, such as bio-polyethylene, are increasingly becoming a research focus.

What is polyethylene film?

Polyethylene film (PE film) is a versatile plastic film produced by polymerizing ethylene monomers. Ethylene, the primary raw material for PE film, is a lightweight hydrocarbon compound abundant in natural gas and petroleum. Polyethylene film is manufactured by selecting film-grade polyethylene resin pellets and processing them into film form using either blown or cast film methods.
