The difference between cardboard and paper

Generally speaking, what we call paper encompasses two terms: paper and cardboard. In fact, the difference between paper and cardboard is based solely on their grammage (the relative weight of paper per square meter).

People generally call paper with a basis weight of 200g/㎡; paper above 200g/㎡ is called cardboard. Previously, the regulations on the basis weight of paper and cardboard in my country were: paper below 150㎡ was called paper; above 200g/㎡ was called cardboard. Paper with a basis weight of 150-200g/㎡ was called cardboard (base paper).

We usually call thin paper “paper” and thick paper “paperboard”. However, for exchanging information and technology with foreign countries, according to the recommendations of the International Organization for Standardization, the basis for distinguishing paper and paperboard is set at 225g/㎡.
