Description

What is POF Polyolefin Shrink Film?

POF Polyolefin shrink film is currently the most popular type of shrink film in the packaging industry. These shrink films can shrink by 80% (in both directions), offer better clarity, and are odorless when heated and cooled. POF shrink film does not release chloride when heated, which is an important advantage over PVC shrink film.

  1. POF centerfold shrink film is used to package a variety of products. These films can be used across all industries because they also comply with food-grade standards. Products shrink-wrapped with POF film can be stored at temperatures ranging from -60°F to 90°F.
  2. POF shrink film will accumulate less on sealing wires, thereby saving costs on sealing wire replacement and frequent cleaning.
  3. The OPTI shrink film series is a multilayer cross-linked polyolefin shrink film that provides a cost-effective solution for a wide range of products. Cross-linking provides a stronger material, offering clear optics, stronger seals, and excellent shrink properties.
  4. The CT-300 series is based on micro-layer technology. This film can demonstrate performance equivalent to or even better than that of significantly thicker materials.

Outstanding Features of POF Polyolefin Shrink Film

  1. Thin, transparent, and flexible film.
  2. Durable, not easily broken, and shrinks continuously when exposed to heat. This film can shrink by more than 75% when heated.
  3. Adhesive and elastic, ensuring a tight seal even in colder environments.
  4. Odorless, free of pollutants, and non-toxic (Non-toxic).
  5. Recyclable, ensuring maximum convenience at an affordable cost.

How many types of POF shrink film are there?

There are four types of POF shrink film available on the market:

  1. Conventional POF shrink film: This is a standard shrink film commonly used to package products and protect their surfaces. The film itself has no particularly notable special properties; it is thin, transparent, and environmentally friendly. It is suitable for general packaging, such as cosmetic boxes, dietary supplement boxes, books, yogurt, yogurt, etc.
  2. Cross-linked POF shrink film: Next is POF shrink film that undergoes a cross-linking process, which increases the film’s strength and durability. It does not tear easily, retains its shrink properties, and remains thin and transparent. It is suitable for products with unique shapes, such as balls.
  3. High-performance POF shrink film: This POF shrink film has high slip properties, making it suitable for high-speed shrink packaging machines. It has a strong seal, making it suitable for semi-finished noodle products.
  4. Anti-fog POF shrink film: Finally, this POF shrink film is specially designed to prevent fogging or condensation from forming on products, particularly fresh food items such as vegetables, fruits, meat, and ready-made frozen meals.

Benefits of using POF shrink film for your business

  1. This is a versatile packaging material. POF shrink film can be used for a wide range of products, including food, beverages, cosmetics and electronics.
  2. Manufacturers can customize the thickness, width and length of the film to suit their business and brand.
  3. POF shrink film has high transparency, allowing consumers to easily see the products inside, which is an important selling point for businesses that want their customers to view products before purchasing.
  4. They are durable and resistant, preventing tears, punctures and other damage. It can effectively protect products during transportation and storage.
  5. It can package products in various ways, especially when heat-sealed, ensuring that the products inside remain fresh and retain their quality.
  6. Protects products from various factors such as moisture, dust and other contaminants.
  7. More affordable than other packaging materials, making it cost-effective for businesses.
  8. POF shrink film is an extremely beneficial packaging solution for businesses. With its versatile properties, it can effectively protect the products inside, create a good impression on consumers and support their purchasing decisions. Most importantly, it offers a cost-effective investment compared to other materials, which will certainly bring significant profits to your business.

POF shrink film production process

POF shrink film (co-extruded multilayer polyolefin heat-shrink film) is manufactured using an advanced “double-bubble” process, primarily using LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) and PP copolymer as raw materials. The core process involves co-extruding three layers (or five layers) for plasticization, shrinking and forming the initial bubble through cooling, followed by a second heating and stretching stage, cooling, flattening and winding. This type of film offers high transparency, a high shrinkage ratio and excellent strength.

POF shrink film production process

Main production process of POF shrink film:

POF production typically uses a special three-layer co-extrusion process followed by biaxial stretching, known as the “double bubble” method or the “Plandi” process.

  1. Raw material feeding and co-extrusion: The main raw materials, PP (outer/inner layers), LLDPE (core layer), and additives, are fed separately into three extruders and heated to melt and plasticize them.
  2. Co-extrusion and forming: The molten plastic flows through a specially designed co-extrusion die to form a three-layer composite molten film tube.
  3. Cooling and first bubble formation: The film tube is cooled and shaped using a water-ring or air-ring cooling system to form the initial film (first bubble).
  4. Stretching, preheating, and heating: After the initial film undergoes the first stretching and dewatering process, it is fed into an oven and heated to the specific polymer stretching temperature (secondary heating is performed at this stage).
  5. Inflation and second stretching: In a high-speed airflow, the film tube is inflated and stretched for the second time, achieving biaxial orientation and thereby obtaining high shrinkage and high transparency.
  6. Cooling, shaping, and winding: After the second bubble cools, it is flattened, cut, and slit, and finally wound by an automatic two-station rotary winder.

Premium Product: Cross-Linked Film Technology

Compared with conventional three-layer POF film, cross-linked film undergoes electron-beam cross-linking of the extruded film using electron irradiation equipment, transforming linear molecular chains into a network structure. Cross-linked film offers higher strength, better cold resistance, and excellent heat-sealing performance.

Process Characteristics:

  1. Raw Material Composition: Copolymer polypropylene (PP) is commonly used for the inner and outer layers to enhance transparency and heat-sealing properties; linear low-density polyethylene is used for the intermediate layer to improve toughness.
  2. Biaxial Stretching: Ensures that the film can shrink rapidly when heated.

This process ensures that the environmentally friendly POF shrink film also offers high transparency and strength.

Storing POF Shrink Film

The key to storing POF (polyolefin) shrink film is to protect it from sunlight, high temperatures, humidity, and contaminants. It should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse at a temperature below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources (such as steam pipes). It is best to use the original packaging or reseal it with plastic film/kraft paper, and consider adding desiccants to maintain the film’s performance.

Specific storage recommendations:

  1. Temperature control: The warehouse temperature should be maintained below 30 degrees C. Prolonged high temperatures will cause the POF film to shrink prematurely or stick together, reducing its physical properties.
  2. Avoid direct sunlight: Prevent prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, which can cause the film to age and become brittle.
  3. Protect against moisture and dust: The storage environment must be kept dry, and sealed packaging should be used. If the POF film will not be used for an extended period, it should be rewrapped and sealed with plastic film or kraft paper, while desiccants should be placed inside the packaging to prevent moisture.
  4. Stacking method: POF film should be stacked vertically or horizontally to avoid excessive pressure that could deform the film rolls or cause the inner layers to stick together.
  5. Avoid heat sources: Do not place it near heaters, hot air blowers, or other heating equipment to prevent heat-induced shrinkage.

By complying with these environmental requirements, POF film can be stored at room temperature for a long time without any deterioration in quality.
